Reservations- Boon or Bane???

Reservations have today become a big reality in the present day India. All the governments that come and go are only busy in giving more and more reservation to the different castes or groups in the society. It is time we cease judging people based on caste focus on their true character. For two pivotal considerations -- that Reservation harms its intended beneficiaries, that it punishes the most innocent and industrious of persons, Reservation in India is to aid previously persecuted minorities, yet, in reality, such initiatives harm their intended beneficiaries. Today many of our countrymen will refuse to visit an SC/ST/OBC/Dalit physician or dentist because of their assumption that he or she was admitted to medical college through 'special preferences', set-aside quotas, and relaxed standards. The same is true for many other professionals and for other beneficiaries of caste Reservation. Even if a minority professional is a qualified practitioner, he or she would be shunned due to the stereotype, created by Reservation, that he or she is a puppet of special interest. Moreover, Caste based Reservation punishes the so called upper class/non-minority workers and students, many of whom would be the most innocent and industrious of persons. Through Reservation, people are kept down because of the past actions of their ancestors. The innocent are punished because of what the guilty have done.
Reservation has today become a major social issue and therefore needs a more depth solution for this problem. So far most of the governments have used reservation for more political benefits and less for the benefits of the people
At present, we need to get the right solution for the peoples’ problems and not just implement newer and newer reservations. As per our constitution, there should be no discrimination on the basis of the religion, race, caste, sex and place of birth but unthoughtful reservation policies are only altering with the basic right of every Indian. Moreover, these reservations are also dividing Indians on the name of castes or groups which is a sign of a concern for our nation in the long run and if not properly dealt, can have harsh impact on the calm social climate of India.
Some ways by which the playing field can be made level for all are:
-Provide improved primary/secondary education so that the Dalits can match steps with the others.
-Offer quotas to the economically-deprived across all communities.
-Increase the slice of the educational pie by creating more seats in the open category.

So reservation:
yes I believe tat reservation shuld be given coz I think reservation is given to such groups not bcoz they r not economically well off but coz of the social stigma attached to them. and if reservation is not given then no one will allow them to gud colleges and other respective areas.
niway i was waiting 4 such a topic frm someone.

Reservations hinder the growth of our country, thanks to the bias it invokes. They need to be slashed.Only then can the truly meritorious get what they deserve.

Priya,
You are right, but then dont you think there are many among us who with the aid of forged documents etc exploit reservation while the deserving are left out many a time?

Keshi,

Abondoned altogether? Dont you think some sort of concession has to be given to the socially and economically underprevilaged at some level if not at college level or for employment? Maybe improved primary education or something of that sort?

I think there shouldnt be any resrvation in higher studies, rather we should give all the facilities for primary education and bring the underprivileged students at par to compete by providing them all the assistance and then let them compete.. merit must never be compromised for anything in life be it caste, creed, reservation, money, politics whatever it is.Reservation degrades the quality of life in all the spheres of life. I read somwhere that many students who get entry thru reservation in engg. college are very frustrated, because they are not able to pass even, and dont want to go home because their parents have ivested evrything they had for them (getting the seat is not everything)and now they cant face them. It would be much better if we give economic assistance and encouragement for studies upto 12th and then take their aptitude test and counsel them for that particular field in which they have interest and they are good.like they say.......... to help someone, teach fishing rather than donating fish.

Reservations are just hindering merit from being recognised.
If at all there has to be any kind of reservation,it should be only for the economically backward not the backward according to caste or creed!
If the so called "creamy layer" keeps growing in our country, then that day is not far when general merit will get a special quota reservation for being the downtrodden ones due to the way reservation policy is adversely affecting the deserving!

Must say..good choice of topics for the blog!..keep blogging!

I think apart frm reservations on caste, reservations shud also be given on the basis of finance. as all the so called low castes are not financially so down.

priya,

u mean on the basis of income? but dont u think they can be given subsidised fees rather than reservations?
